SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL GUIDANCE

HOW DO I DISPOSE OF WASTE?
The following is a list of the most questioned materials but is not an exhaustive list of all wastes. Please contact the Iliamna Landfill Waste Management Department for more information or you need assistance disposing of a waste not listed below. Abbreviations used in this document are at the bottom of each page.

Aerosol Cans
Empty containers with no residual pressure may be disposed of in the Household Waste. Containers with pressure or residual hazardous liquid (pesticides, solvents, paint, etc.) must be disposed of through the Iliamna Landfill’s Hazardous Waste Collection Program.
​
Ammunitions & Explosives
STRICTLY PROHIBITED AT ILIAMNA LANDFILL These materials are NOT accepted for disposal at ILIAMNA LANDFILL
Ammunition may be disposed of through a gun club/shooting range or ammunition distributor.
​
Animal Carcasses
NOTIFY ATTENDANT upon arrival to get disposal guidance.
Small carcasses should be double-bagged with the top tied.
Large carcasses do not need to be bagged.
Animal Manure
NOTIFY ATTENDANT upon arrival. Must be free of liquids.
Small quantities must be double-bagged and securely tied.
Large quantities of animal manure are only accepted in the lined cell at NOTIFY ATTENDANT for disposal instruction. Animal manure may be mixed with straw or hay but must be clean and free of trash, bags, etc.
Antifreeze
Antifreeze (alone or mixed with any other substances) must be disposed of through the Iliamna Landfill’s Hazardous Waste Collection Program

Asbestos Containing Material (ACM)

Ash
Burn barrel ash must be completely cooled prior to disposal. Notify attendant when disposing of ash. Place in designated area, as directed by attendant. Incinerator ash is considered special waste. Refer to the Special Waste Disposal Policy.

Asphalt

ATV/UTV/Snow Machine
STRICTLY PROHIBITED AT ILIAMNA LANDFILL
Batteries
Household/Common Batteries (alkaline, lithium, nickel cadmium, etc.) disposed by households are to be placed in designated containers at Iliamna Landfill. The Iliamna Landfill manages household batteries through the hazardous waste collection program.

Small businesses/generators must dispose of batteries through the Iliamna Landfill hazardous waste collection
program.
Large businesses/generators must handle batteries as universal waste or hazardous waste.
​
Vehicle/Equipment Batteries (lead-acid) are to be placed in designated plastic totes at the ILIAMNA LANDFILL. Each source (person/business) is limited to 10 batteries per year. Large commercial batteries (forklift, etc.) are not accepted.
Cell Phone Batteries (NiCad) are PREFERABLY disposed of through cell phone suppliers. Alternatively, they may be placed in designated household battery containers. Alternatively, check with cell phone suppliers as they may accept spent batteries.

Boats
STRICTLY PROHIBITED AT ILIAMNA LANDFILL

Bulbs, Lamps and Ballasts, Fluorescent and high intensity discharge (HID) bulbs may be disposed of by households and small businesses during Iliamna Landfill’s Hazardous Waste Collection Program. There is a limit of 25 bulbs per month, per source (person/business). DO NOT tape or otherwise bind bulbs together. Larger quantities may be disposed of through the hazardous waste collection program.

Bulbs, Lamps and Ballasts
Green-tipped fluorescent bulbs may be disposed of with trash as long as the generator has determined that the bulbs do not exhibit a hazardous waste characteristic (either by testing or applying generator knowledge). Otherwise, green-tipped bulbs should be managed like regular fluorescent bulbs (as described above).
LED bulbs generated by households may be disposed of with their trash.
Small businesses/generators must dispose of LED bulbs through the Iliamna Landfill’s Hazardous Waste Collection Program.
Large businesses/generators must handle LED bulbs as universal waste, hazardous waste, or special waste Iliamna Landfill’s Hazardous Waste Collection Program. Light Ballasts may contain PCBs. Unless a ballast is labeled as “non-PCB containing”, the ballast is assumed to contain PCBs and is not accepted for disposal at IVC LANDFILL. PCB-containing ballasts must be disposed of through the Iliamna Landfill’s Hazardous Waste Collection Program.
Compressed Gas Cylinders
Cylinders must be empty. All pressure must be released, and valve(s) must be removed. If the cylinder does not meet these criteria, contact a compressed gas cylinder distributor for information on proper management.

Drums/Containers
Drums/containers need to be empty and crushed or have one end cut out so they can be inspected to assure they contain no residual material.
​
E-Cigarettes/Vape Devises/Nicotine Liquids
E-cigarettes and vape devices contain batteries and nicotine liquids (i.e. vape juice, e-juice, e-liquids, etc.), which are both hazardous.
Residential Households: E-cigarettes and vape devices generated by households that contain no nicotine liquids may be disposed of in the designated battery containers at landfills and transfer facilities. E-cigarettes and vaping devices generated by households that contain (or potentially contain) nicotine liquids must be disposed of through the Iliamna Landfill’s Hazardous Waste Collection Program.

Small businesses/generators: E-cigarettes and vaping devices generated by small businesses/generators must be disposed of through the Iliamna Landfill’s Hazardous Waste Collection Program.
​
Large business/generators: STRICTLY PROHIBITED AT ILIAMNA LANDFILL E-cigarettes and vaping devices generated by large businesses/generators are prohibited from being disposed of through a qualified hazardous waste disposal company.
​
E-cigarettes and vaping devices are also accepted for disposal through drug take-back programs if the batteries are removed. Electronics
Electronics may contain heavy metals and other hazardous materials. Households and small businesses may dispose of electronics with their trash, but the Iliamna Landfill ENCOURAGES the recycling of electronics through electronics recycling events, which are typically held each spring.
Large businesses are PROHIBITED from disposing of electronics at Iliamna LANDFILL, but they may dispose of their electronics through an electronics recycling event. STRICTLY PROHIBITED AT ILIAMNA LANDFILL

Exit Signs
Exit signs may contain small amounts of radioactive material. Disposal of radioactive materials is PROHIBITED at Iliamna LANDFILL. Please contact the manufacturer for proper handling and disposal. STRICTLY PROHIBITED AT ILIAMNA LANDFILL
Fire Extinguisher
All pressure must be released and the unit must be checked to verify that the contents have been removed. Valve removal is preferred.

Fish Waste
Residential fish waste must be double-bagged with the top tied. Residents are limited to 2 bags of fish waste per day. Fish waste may be placed in the fish waste bin at designated place.
Commercial fish waste STRICTLY PROHIBITED AT ILIAMNA LANDFILL
Flares
STRICTLY PROHIBITED AT ILIAMNA LANDFILL
Flares are NOT ACCEPTED for disposal at Iliamna Landfill.

Flares, Aerial/Marine STRICTLY PROHIBITED AT ILIAMNA LANDFILL be directly disposed through a hazardous waste contractor. Flares, non-Aerial must be disposed through the Iliamna Landfill hazardous waste collection program.
​
Fuel Filters
Fuel filters may be disposed with Household Trash as long as they are completely drained and empty.
​
Grass Clippings and Leaves
CPL: Grass clippings and leaves may be deposited in the grass clippings and leaves bin or the grass clippings and leaves pile. Grass clippings and leaves must be clean and free of trash, bags, dirt, etc.
​
Hazardous Waste
Hazardous waste (such antifreeze, paint, oily waste, etc.) must be disposed through the hazardous waste program.
​
Household Solid Waste
Wastes generated from households except hazardous waste are generally acceptable for disposal at all ILIAMNA LANDFILL. Household waste is deposited at designated area.
​
Kitchen Grease
Small quantities of kitchen grease in sealed, leak proof containers with no larger than (5 ) five-gallon capacity may be disposed in the designated area. Disposers are limited to no more than five (5) containers/day (unless directed otherwise by the Iliamna LANDFILL). Larger quantities are discouraged and require approval by the landfill manager.

Liquid Waste
Liquid waste is any material that does not pass the EPA’s Paint Filter Test (EPA Method 9095). Liquid wastes are NOT ACCEPTED for disposal.

Medical Waste
STRICTLY PROHIBITED AT ILIAMNA LANDFILL
Medical Facility: Medical waste generated at a medical facility (such as a hospital or clinic) is not accepted at IVC LANDFILL. This type of medical waste must be properly treated prior to disposal, as required by state regulation.
Household Waste: Medical waste generated at home (including pet care medical waste) is preferably disposed via your medical/veterinarian provider, clinic or a medical waste disposal company. However, if these options are not available, dispose as follows:

Pressurized containers (such as inhalers) must have all of the pressure removed prior to disposal.

Sharps (used and unused) must be placed in a sturdy, puncture-resistant, leak proof container with a sealing lid (like a one-liter soda bottle, laundry detergent jug or kitty litter container). The bottle must be labelled as medical waste (for example: “SHARPS: DO NOT OPEN!”), sealed tightly, and taped closed for added safety prior to disposal with trash.

Potentially infectious waste should not be discarded with trash. These wastes should be placed in leak proof plastic containers with a sealing lid and should be properly incinerated or treated by a qualified medical waste treatment facility.

Pharmaceuticals and medications are preferably disposed by returning them to a hospital/clinic/pharmacy or through prescription drug take-back programs. The next best option is to remove the labels/identifiers, place in a container, mix with an ‘undesirable substance’ (i.e. kitty litter, coffee grounds, sawdust, etc.), and dispose in trash. Flushing down the toilet is NOT RECOMENDED, since medications may pollute surface or ground water. Medications containing radioactive contents are STRICTLY PROHIBITED from disposal.
Mobile Homes/Motor Homes/Recreational Vehicles (RVs) STRICTLY PROHIBITED AT ILIAMNA LANDFILL

Metals (Scrap Metal)
Accepted ONLY at the IVC LANDFILL, but PREFERABLY disposed of at a Scrap Metals Recycler.

Neon Signs
Please contact the manufacturer for proper handling and disposal. Older lights may contain PCBs within the transformer. Iliamna Landfill CAN NOT accept PCB wastes.
​
Paint
Empty paint cans may be disposed with trash.

Oil-based paint must be disposed through the Iliamna Landfill hazardous waste collection program.

Water-based paint that is liquid must be disposed through the Iliamna Landfill hazardous waste collection program. Solidified water-based paint may be disposed with trash.

Power Poles
STRICTLY PROHIBITED AT ILIAMNA LANDFILL

Printers and Toner Cartridges
Printer and toner cartridges contain heavy metals and are NOT ACCEPTED for disposal at any ILIAMNA LANDFILL. Printers may be disposed through an electronics recycling event. Cartridges may be recycled through the cartridge manufacturers and through many of the retail stores that sell office supplies.

Propane Cylinders and Tanks
Propane cylinders/canisters (1-lb or less, camp stove sized) may be disposed with trash as long as they are completely empty.
Propane tanks/bottles/cylinders (larger than 1-lb, including tanks for propane grills) MUST be empty. All pressure must be released, and valve(s) MUST be removed.
Radioactive Waste STRICTLY PROHIBITED AT ILIAMNA LANDFILL
Radioactive wastes are NOT ACCEPTED for disposal at Iliamna LANDFILL, and there is no Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) radiological waste permitted facilities in the State of Alaska. Contact ADEC’s State Radiological Liaison Officer for disposal options.

Railroad Ties
STRICTLY PROHIBITED AT ILIAMNA LANDFILL
Recyclables
Recyclables are collected at Iliamna LANDFILL- accepts aluminum, cardboard, and mixed paper for recycling. In addition, Iliamna Landfill accepts plastics (twist-top PETE #1 containers and HDPE #2 only), glass and tin cans.
Sewage Waste
Sewage, including from ‘dry toilets’, is NOT PERMITTED for disposal in any Iliamna LANDFILL. STRICTLY PROHIBITED AT ILIAMNA LANDFILL

Smoke Alarms/Detectors
STRICTLY PROHIBITED AT ILIAMNA LANDFILL
Some smoke alarms/detectors may contain small amounts of radioactive material. Households may dispose of smoke alarms/detectors with their trash, but disposal through the manufacturer is recommended. Businesses must return smoke alarms/detectors to the manufacturer or ship them out of state for proper disposal.

Snow Machine

Soil
Soil is generally not accepted at any IVC LANDFILL, but there are acceptations with prior approval.
Clean Soil: May be approved for disposal at Iliamna Landfill on a case-by-case basis.
Contaminated Soil: STRICTLY PROHIBITED AT ILIAMNA LANDFILL

Special/Industrial Waste

Tanks
Tanks are accepted. Tanks MUST be cleaned out of residual material.
Tanks under 500 gallons must have one end cut out or an opening adequate so the interior can be inspected prior to disposal.
Tanks 500 gallons or larger need to be crushed or cut into manageable size pieces (lengths of 10 feet or less) PRIOR TO ARRIVAL on site; cutting is not permitted on Iliamna Landfill property.

Tires
Tires may be disposed in the tire area

Totes
Totes must be cleaned out of residual material.
Trailers
STRICTLY PROHIBITED AT ILIAMNA LANDFILL
Flatbed and Utility trailers: Flatbed and Utility trailers are PREFERABLY disposed through a scrap metal recycler.
Camper style trailers: STRICTLY PROHIBITED AT ILIAMNA LANDFILL

Used Oil
STRICTLY PROHIBITED AT ILIAMNA LANDFILL
Oil mixed with other substances (water, fuel, solvent, etc.) must be disposed through the hazardous waste collection program.

Used Oil Containers
Used oil container may be disposed with household trash as long as they are completely drained and empty.

Wood/Brush/Land Clearing Debris
Wood/Brush/Land Clearing Debris may be deposited in the designated brush piles at by both the public and businesses. Iliamna Landfill DOES NOT accept stumps. PRIOR to arrival on site, wood/brush/land clearing debris must be cut less than 4-feet in length. Cutting is not permitted on Iliamna Landfill property. NO SMOKING is allowed near brush piles. Wood/brush/land clearing debris MUST be clean and free of trash, bags, dirt, building lumber, nails, etc.
